Other reviewers have mentioned the many anachronisms, some jarring. Coupled with a far fetched plot that just skims the surface and is a little too stretched and coincidental to swallow, this seemed written by a sixth grader. There were no new, fresh plot or character trajectories. Characters were very cardboard. This could have worked if the author had dug deeper. It just felt uninspired and asked too much suspension of disbelief - particularly the last third. When a character, fresh from surgery with shrapnel near his heart sneaks out of the hospital to hide up a mountain...naw, not buying it. Lots of rookie mistakes in this book. Wish it had been better. This was a disappointment because I had enjoyed her first book so much. It may be the genre rather than the book itself but much of this read like a harlequin Bodice Ripper Romance, probably because it is a Harlequin Romance. The most handsome man in the world falls hard for the smartest nurse in America and Pearl Harbor happens. The subplot is that the American government expected the attack on Pearl Harbor and sent out goons to threaten anyone who might reveal this knowledge. It is clear from the historical record that the US did have the information that Pearl was a likely target but is by no means clear that the failure to identify this in time was deliberate, a screwup or just bureaucratic bumbling. The sub subplot was that a jilted lover shows up and tries to kill our heroine and our hero. It reminds me of the movie Pearl Harbor because the actual event was not dramatic enough and needed some additional excitement.
